Song of the Day: Ned’s Atomic Dustbin – “Grey Cell Green”
Released:April 1, 1991
Album: God Fodder
If any UK band could have crossed over to mega star status in the early 90s, it’s Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. With a sound that could have been described as a cross between grunge and pop punk, Ned’s sounded far more American than anything coming directly out of the Madchester and Britpop scenes. Blaring, fuzzed-out guitars, catchy melodies, a funky two bass attack, and rhythmic vocals, tracks like “Happy,” “Kill Your Television” and “Less Than Useful” should have appealed to the same Lollapalooza-going fans who were obsessed with Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction, and eventually Green Day. Despite getting their videos on MTV’s 120 minutes, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin never achieved mainstream success in America like they did in the UK with their classic 1991 album God Fodder. The video for “Grey Cell Green” was one of the two that got MTV airplay, and remains one of their most iconic songs.
[Pre-Chorus]
Desire
When your, your desire
It has been found
You’ll be running far away
When your, your desire
It has been found
You’ll be running far away
[Chorus]
You’re telling me it’s in the trees, in the trees
It’s not, it’s inside me now
You’re telling me it’s on the ground, it’s all around
Well it’s not, it’s inside me
You’re telling me it’s in the skies, well use your eyes
It’s not, it’s inside me now
You’re telling me it’s mother earth, some sign of birth
It’s not, it’s inside me, uh-huh
[Pre-Chorus]
Desire
When your, your desire
It has been found
You’ll be running far away
When your, your desire
It has been found
You’ll be running far away, far away
[Chorus]
You’re telling me it’s in the trees, in the trees
It’s not, it’s inside me now
You’re telling me it’s on the ground, it’s all around
Well it’s not, it’s inside me
You’re telling me it’s in the skies, well use your eyes
It’s not, it’s inside me now
You’re telling me it’s mother earth, some sign of birth
It’s not, it’s inside me, uh-huh
[Bridge]
Desire
It’s inside her
It’s inside me
Desire, desire
[Chorus]
You’re telling me it’s in the trees, in the trees
It’s not, it’s inside me now
You’re telling me it’s on the ground, it’s all around
Well it’s not, it’s inside me
You’re telling me it’s in the skies, well use your eyes
It’s not, it’s inside me now
You’re telling me it’s mother earth, some sign of birth
It’s not, it’s inside me, come on!
