Song of the Day: Jean-Pierre Decerf – “Black Safari”
Released: circa 1975-1979
Album: Space Oddities: 1975-1979
From the 1970s into the 1980s, self-taught Parisian composer Jean-Pierre Decerf produced around 20 experimental albums of production and library music. Decerf wasn’t aspiring to reach the masses or to perform at arenas. These spacey electronic releases were meant to accompany other people’s images. Over time, crate diggers, especially in the east coast hip hop community, have sampled his records, bringing the sounds to a new audience. In 2015 Born Bad Records compiled many of his works for the splendid Space Oddities: 1975-1979. These magical recordings sound far ahead of their time, like a prelude to the French electronic pop that would come in the 2000s with acts like Air and Daft Punk.
