Song of the Day: Chris Bell – “Speed of Sound”
Released: February 21, 1992
Recorded: 1974–1975
Album: I Am The Cosmos
Every once in a while—or rather, more often than not—I get sucked down a Big Star rabbit hole. There’s few bands I love more than the 70s power pop icons. Each time, I find myself obsessively listening to one or more of their songs, completely enraptured by combination of pop songwriting perfection and emotional resonance. Recently—for the past several months—I can’t stop listening to Chris Bell’s “Speed of Sound”.
Bell left Big Star after their first album, spending the next several years pursuing a solo career. At the time, he was working in his father’s restaurant, struggling with depression, and immersed in Christianity. Tragically, Bell crashed his car into a light pole on December 27, 1978. He was dead at the age of 27.
Though he had released a single earlier in 1978, it would take another 14 years for his solo recordings to be compiled into the LP I Am The Cosmos. The posthumous album is every bit as breathtaking as anything Big Star ever released, while providing a portrait into the beauitful melancholy soul of Chris Bell. “I Am the Cosmos” And “You And Your Sister” are generally the more well known tracks of the album, but “Speed of Sound” may be the crown jewel of Bell’s entire career. Few songs have ever embodied the feeling of heartbreak and loneliness as well. It’s a true tearjerker—and the synth tone the arrives at around the 2:30 mark pushes takes it to another whole level of sorrow and hurt.
I remember the first time
You said you loved me
I waited all weekend
You never called me
So you find him attractive
So what if he is
You’d like some excitement
We could go to St. Kitts
So it goes
On and on
My love grows
And yours is gone
A lonely existence
Well it’s just a lie
If there is a reason
I’d like to know why
Something I want you to know
I’ve told you this once before
Don’t want you to see him no more
Once again
You’ve let me down
Broke my heart
And turned me round
