New Synthsation

Although synthesizers arrived in the 1960s and began to regularly find their way into popular music by the early 70s, it wasn’t until the late 70s and early 80s when they really became a prominent force in both mainstream pop music and the independent underground. It’s impossible to think of the early 80s and the emergence of MTV without the synth pop sounds that dominated that era. While much of this music is generally referred to as New Wave, I tend to think of New Wave as a more generalized term for the various alternative scenes of the late 70s/early 80s that included art rock, punk, post-punk, and synth pop.

In 2020, I began an exploration into classic era synth pop, compiling hundreds of songs that fit within a loose definition of the genre. It’s a mix of ground-breaking songs, smash hits, and under-the-radar deep cuts. It’s a weird genre that simultaneously gets mocked more than it deserves while remaining insanely popular (especially on the nostalgia circuit). Some of it sounds incredibly dated this far removed from its initial release, but there’s also a retro-futurist charm in that. On this playlist you’ll find loads of songs by Kraftwerk, OMD, New Order, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, but you’ll also find essential tracks by lesser known acts such as Oppenheimer Analysis, Ann Steel, and Yellow Magic Orchestra.
