Astronautalis @ Pianos | 10/6/06

Astronautalis is a unique performer, and he put on one hell of a show at Pianos on friday night. Part hip hop, part indie rock country, he transcended genres smoothly, backed only by a DJ. The highlight of the night was his display of freestyle skills, which proved his background as a battle MC. The 2 freestyle raps that he pulled off were smooth, and hillarious, using suggestions from the audience such as "Senator Foley," "pirates," "the letter r," and "marsupials" to use in his flow. The suggestion of marsupials started off as wallaby, which he was reluctant to use, because it's boring, but the persistent audience member convinced him eventually to use marsupials eventually. This all proved to be hillarious banter.

check out Astronautalis at myspace.

24 Years of Jonny Leather

On October 3, 1982, I, Jonny Leather was born. It's 24 years later, and a lot has changed. When I came into the world "Pass The Dutchie" was the #1 song in America, now Justin Timberlake has the #1 song in America. My childhood memories have been lost through a series of intense concussions that I have experienced over the full span of my life. I have become unable to reach back into my brain and recall past experiences, no matter how major. Sure, I remember some things. I remember who my friends were (for the most part), I remember my teachers names, and I can remember that things happened, but the actual memory is gone. Images of the past tell me things that I would no longer know. More proof in the power and importance of the photograph, but not every moment can be captured on film, and even if they could, they speak little about the emotional aspects of the moment, beyond what is visual.

Without a strong recollected personal history implanted in my mind, I must go on to create a strong enough series of moments which will unavoidably lock into my brain's memory system which has been so faulty. My brain has been like a computer with a bad hard drive, crashing all of the time and losing vital information.

This year, I will retain the memories of my every day life through an enormous series of photographs, sketches and notes from my day. The camera will be become a part of me, an extension to my sight, and its film/memory card will act as my memory. That which is not captured will not survive beyond the present tense, and will soon be forgotton. That which is captured may live on forever.

New Music

A lot of new records have just come out and are coming out, including new albums by The Hold Steady, Black Keys, Kasabian and The Rapture. Are they any good? Check out Jonny-Leather's reviews to find out. Reviews of Decemberists, Killers, VietNam and more coming soon. I won't be reviewing the new Jet cd. Besides not wanted to have to listen to the whole thing through, let alone one song, Pitchfork's review is more than perfect.
