Monsters Are Waiting @ Pianos | 7/20/06

For 2 straight nights, I was at Pianos, having my mind blown by Monsters Are Waiting. While the band mixed up their setlist between each night, they played all the best songs off of their debut, Fascination, and included a perfect cover of Stone Roses' classic "I Wanna Be Adored." Annalee's pressence as the front woman should easily expand the band's popularity, as she combines good looks and style with a cute demeanor, all to go along with her beautiful vocals.

The Bon Savants were one of the openers for night to, and I must say, they have a solid future ahead of them. They have an excellent sound.

The Buzzcocks @ Warsaw 7/11/06

The Buzzcocks played Warsaw in Brooklyn on Tuesday night. Needless to say, I was there, camera in hand. The Buzzcocks rocked the house. I wish I could say the same for their openers, The Adored and The Strays.

Bling Kong
The Teeth

Bling Kong @ Mercury Lounge | 7/8/06

I'll never get tired of seeing Bling Kong tear through a wildly entertaining set. Every time I see them, they don't seem to hold anything back, and give it their all, no matter how big the crowd is. As always, they were great.

I missed all but one other act, because I was at the Mets double header. The one other band I caught was Dr. Dog's labelmate, The Teeth, who were excellent, and had a similarly odd sound as Dr. Dog.

The Walkmen

The Walkmen @ Warsaw| 6/30/06

The Walkmen are great on record, but their recordings come nowhere near the excellence of their superior live show. They don't need laser lights, choreography, outfit changes, or big video screens. They just play with raw energy like no other band of this generation. I really thought the openers, Rockwell, and Richard Swift were pretty lousy. Rockwell was a bit funny, but his schtick wore off quite quickly, while Richard Swift was a mediocre americana-ish band. I actually heard someone behind me compare them to a mix between Wilco and Beck. Seriously, I don't understand how someone could possibly hear them and think that way. These are 2 of the iconic bands of our time. Haphazard comparisons drive me nuts.

Feist (w/Kevin Drew)

Feist/Jason Collett/Buck65 @ Central Park Summerstage | 6/25/06

It was Canada Day at Central Park Summerstage on Sunday with 3 of Canada's best acts playing a free show for a few hundred people, who took the risk of being rained on. Luckily for us, it only drizzled a little bit during the performances. Collett started things off playing mostly songs off of his terriffic Idols of Exile album. Buck 65 followed with a very interesting spoken word/hip hop/poetry set, with some very funny songs. Feist finished the day off with her sweet sweet voice, which she occassionally would make a joke about when she had trouble getting it in tune. The highlight of the day had to be when Kevin Drew came out during Feist's encore to do my personally favorite Broken Social Scene song, "Major Label Debut."

Liars
The Apes

Liars and Apes @ Warsaw | 6/24/06

Returning back to their former home in Williamsburg, the Liars brought along The Apes, a band that they have known for years, after meeting at Brownies back when the club still existed. While this show started late due to Alan Vega having to cancell, it was everything I expected it to be. The Apes, equipped with a new singer started it all off with their bizarre, dark, stoner organ goth? The Liars then took the stage and tore through a great set, mostly consisting of tracks off of the epic Drum's Not Dead, only to encore with Nirvana's raucus classic "Territorial Pissings."

JOHNOSSI @ Pianos | 6/22/06

Swedish duo, JOHNOSSI rocked out at Pianos on thursday to a small crowd. Despite only being a duo, they created quite a full sound of garage inspired indie-rock. I will have a full review of their new cd shortly.

More Shows. More Pictures.
Thursday June 15, I was at North Six for NY Press' Indie Label Jones Redder Records show, featuring Canada, Tiny Amps and Saturday Looks Good to Me. All 3 of these bands seem to go overlooked by the bloggers who now control the music world, but don't be suprised if any of these bands start gaining major attention in the future.

More Shows. More Pictures.

Tuesday June 13, I was at the Knitting Factory for The Boy Least Likely To, and their upbeat sunny indie-pop. The Bicycles opened with more upbeat fun. The bands had very strong vibes of happiness that would make even the gloomiest goth-rocker hint at a smile.

Another Night. Another Show.
Last night I was at yet another show. No, not Phoenix Foundation again. This time I was at the Bowery Ballroom to catch Guns N Roses and Air Supply...actually no wait, it was Mr. Brownstone (the Guns N Roses tribute band) and Hair Supply (the hair metal tribute to Air Supply). Unlike most tribute bands, these bands are actually a load of fun, and did not dissapoint. Bling Kong and Peelander Z warmed up the crowd with their usual powerfully exhausting energetic performances. While all 4 bands put on a great show, it's Peelander Z's crazy Japanese freakout extravaganza that will stick in my mind forever. I've never seen a performance like it, and I've never laughed harder.
I brought my camera to the show, but my battery died before the end of Bling Kong's opening performance. However, I was able to get enough juice to take one decent shot of Peelander Z. Yeah. I'm an idiot and should always charge my battery before a show, no matter how full the camera says the battery is.

The Other Jonny Leather
At thursday's Phoenix Foundation show at Pianos, someone apparently claimed to be Jonny Leather, in order to get into the show via the list. This happened before my arrival, and nearly hindered my chances of getting in. Of course I got in and had a great time, but this is amazing. Is there someone really that is claiming to be me, or was it an odd mistake that had my name crossed off the list. I hope it's the former. It's just so interesting. Who on Earth could pull off using the name Jonny Leather, without being questioned about it. No one has ever believed that it's my real name.

Phoenix Foundation @ Cake Shop

What's the deal with people talking at shows. I know there's always gonna be a couple people chatting it up, but 2 of the last shows I've been to were overhwelmingly disturbed by large groups of people inconsiderately babbling about god knows what, totally throwing off the concentration of the band's performing. If you go to a show, don't you want to hear it? And if not, please at least stand in the back, or go outside or whatever. Brings me back to years ago at the Warped Tour when I really wanted to see Bad Religion, but all I could hear is the two dickheads standing next to me. God Damn.

Phoenix Foundation @ Pianos

Straight from Middle Earth (New Zealand), Phoenix Foundation came and conquered Pianos last night with an ecclectic performance that was at times loud, at times soft, jamming into other dimensions. They'll be at Cake Shop tonight and Mercury Lounge tommorrow. I highly reccommend checking them out. Oh, and the Cake Shop show is free, so there's no excuse not to, if you're in NYC.
