Over the next month or 2, I’ll be rolling out a lot of big changes to jonnyleather.com. My music blog to moving to meccalecca.com/blog in order for me to utilize jonnyleather.com for bigger things. The MeccaLecca blog is already up and running here – meccalecca.com/blog.

JonnyLeather.com

Moving the music blog to MeccaLecca was essentially to free JonnyLeather.com for some bigger things. What can you expect to find on JonnyLeather.com in the future?

Photo Portfolio

Design Portfolio

Special Books created by Jonny Leather

New Artwork

& plenty of other special projects on the horizon

Stay tuned for the complete overhaul of JonnyLeather.com, and in the meantime head over to MeccaLecca.com/blog

Mecca Lecca

Though JonnyLeather.com and MeccaLecca.com will intertwine in ways, MeccaLecca will house the music-related projects including my blog and concert series .

With the music blog on MeccaLecca I plan on taking a new approach to how the content of a music blog is created. Rather than posting something entirely new every time a band releases a new single or announces tour dates, I will update more comprehensive posts that particular band. The advantage of this will be that if you like the new Hølas single and want to hear more or find out more about Hølas, you won’t have to search, because everything ever written about Hølas on this blog will be contained in the same comprehensive post. Think of MeccaLecca as a music/band database with personality and a pulse. Aside from comprehensive posts about bands I’m digging, there will be new photos, mixtapes, features, and info regarding my future concerts.

For every hint at Mogwai, I could hear bits and pieces of 90 Day Men—a forgotten Chicago band that never got the attention they deserved. “Eighty-Sixed” is just a taste of a band with a very clear vision and one worth seeking.

Last year, a very small indie label based out in the no man’s land of Kansas City, MO named The Record Machine caught my eye with the release of Capybara’s Try Brother. The album was the perfect example of brilliance fallen through the cracks. Media attention was minimal, but those who heard it loved it and by the end of the year it was right at the top of my list of favorites. This year The Record Machine has released a couple potential hit records by Saharan Gazelle Boy, The Soft Reeds, Max Justus and State Bird, but maybe the best of the bunch is Each Other All of the Time by Cowboy Indian Bear. They’ll be hard to pin down. While all of the songs essentially hit along the pop rock lines of Hot Chip or French Kicks, there are some really unexpected turns taken. The hooks will make instant fans and the depth of the songwriting and compositions will keep them coming back for more.

Led by former Gold Republic front man Ben Grimes, the debut single by Soft Reeds is well-crafted art rock a la Talking Heads and Wire. Vocally, Grimes sounds similar to Sunset Rubdown’s Spencer Krug, though a bit less weird. Much like Sunset Rubdown and Frog Eyes, Soft Reeds’ songs on Soft Reeds Are Bastards are loaded with an often challenging tension that forces attention out of a listener.
